New requirement in Spanish public procurement

In Spain, starting in 2024, the use of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology will be mandatory in all public procurement. This change promises to transform the way publicly funded construction projects are managed and executed, with the aim of improving efficiency in the procurement of works, services, and supplies. BIM allows for comprehensive control over each phase of the project, from initial planning to the final maintenance of the buildings, including construction. With this measure, the government seeks to improve the quality and efficiency of public infrastructures, reducing costs by approximately 10-20%, as explained in the Official State Gazette ([BOE], 2023), as well as execution times and errors in the process. Furthermore, digitalization through BIM will facilitate greater transparency and collaboration among the different parties involved in the projects.
